Interview IV

This is an interview I had with a fan named Rachel.

How do you get ideas for you songs? and how do you make them apply to all people in general?

You know I just really write about what I’m feeling at the time.  I used to think that I was the only one who felt a certain way about things so I closed myself out to the world and wrote these songs.  Once I realized that others were relate I guess I was somewhat surprised.  But in retrospect, most of my stuff had to do with heart ache and confusion and I guess everyone goes through these things, sometimes alone.  And when you don’t let anybody else what you are feeling and you hear it in a song, you come off thinking, “this song was written for me”.  I guess its just that we all feel alone sometimes.

How long does it take you to write the songs and how many drafts does it take before you get the song exactly how you want it?

A long, long time!! The reason why is because I write the music first, which can take up to a year for some songs.  When I feel inspired to write lyrics I usually take the music I've had for some time and then write all the lyrics at once.  For example, all the lyrics on the last album were written in about ten days but the music was around for close to a couple years. When I start writing, it usually only takes me one draft to write the lyrics.

How do you pick out such perfect words for your songs that make sense and make it sound good?

Thanks for the compliment!  I just try and write the words and try to be honest and make them flow.  If people think they’re perfect, I am honored…

And lastly what advise do you have for anyone who wants to write songs but just cant seem to make anything they write make sense?

Oh wow, this is going to sound so cliché, but keep trying.  Writing songs is something only you should like.  Yeah remember there are no rules…They don’t always have to rhyme, they don’t always have to go verse, chorus, They can be short, do what ever you want.  About songs making sense, I look back and don’t even know why or how I wrote some lyrics.  To me, many of the lyrics don’t make sense…in some songs, the meaning changes mid-song.  Anyway, write what you feel and it’ll come.  Just make sure the lyrics are sincere and that you feel true to them.
